Who we are
Aegean Baselines a community-led, citizen science driven, monitoring initiative based in Salamina Island, Giala village, bringing together local volunteers, students, divers, and marine science advisors.
The project was initiated by a teenager passionate about marine conservation, whose family has been in Giala for 4 generations. Dimitris Foteinos, then 13 years old was inspired by similar citizen science initiatives in California and immediately started working on a hypothesis and an action plan for Salamina Island. This has grown into a collaborative effort and grows even further!
Why Community Science
Local knowledge + scientific rigor = powerful data
Sustainable monitoring requires community ownership
Builds marine literacy and stewardship in the next generation
